Purpose and Overview

The purpose of this lecture is to provide an update on the management of atrial fibrillation in patients with systolic heart failure based on the most recent clinical research, new major society guidelines, and clinical experience.

Target Audience

UT Southwestern faculty, fellows, residents and medical students, community physicians, nurse clinicians, physician assistants and nurses.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the participant should be able to:

  • Understand the updates to the major society guidelines on management of atrial fibrillation in systolic heart failure, particularly regarding catheter ablation.
  • Identify the patients with systolic heart failure most likely to and least likely to benefit from a rhythm control strategy for management of atrial fibrillation.
  • Understand the potential role and benefit of atrioventricular node ablation and cardiac resynchronization in patients with permanent atrial fibrillation and systolic heart failure
