Assistant Professor, Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science
Amit A. Shah, M.D., is a Consultant in the Division of Community Internal Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine, at Mayo Clinic in Arizona. Dr. Shah holds the academic rank of assistant professor of medicine, Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science. He joined the staff of Mayo Clinic in 2014.
Dr. Shah earned his B.S. in chemical engineering from Washington University and then studied philosophy in India for one year before going to medical school. He graduated from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, and completed his internal medicine residency at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He subsequently completed a geriatric medicine and clinician-educator fellowship at Johns Hopkins University.
Dr. Shah’s clinical interests include the care of complex and frail older patients and end-of-life care, including geriatric assessment, preventative geriatrics, prognostication, palliative care and advanced care planning. His academic focus is on geriatric medicine and medical education.
Dr. Shah’s passion is medical education. He was previosuly the George M. and Kristen L. Lund Associate Dean of Student Affairs of the Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine and prior to that the Associate Dean of Faculty Affairs and served as a member of the Admissions Committee. He leads the longitudinal geriatrics curriculum called Senior Sages for the medical school and also directs the internal medicine residency geriatric medicine rotation. He was accepted to the Mayo Clinic Academy of Educational Excellence at the Legacy level in 2020.
In addition, Dr. Shah has provided mentorship to numerous medical students. He also enjoys teaching about clinical reasoning and developing online geriatrics education tools. He served as the founding editor-in-chief of the webGEMs (web-based Geriatrics Education Modules, now known as Aquifer Geriatrics), the American Geriatrics Society’s national case-based curriculum for medical, NP and PA students based on the AAMC Minimum Geriatrics Competencies for medical students and is currently the Senior Director of this curriculum. This curriculum has logged over 500,000 case completions to date.
Prior to joining Mayo Clinic, Dr. Shah served on the faculty at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, Texas, where he was an Associate Professor and the Clerkship Director for Internal Medicine. He was co-PI of a $2 million education grant to enhance geriatric education in the medical school and residency programs. He was elected to the UT Southwestern Academy of Teachers and honored by medical students with a number of teaching awards during his time at UT Southwestern.
Dr. Shah is a fellow of the American Geriatrics Society and the American College of Physicians.
