Gary Beven, Gary Beven, MD, CPE, FACHE

Dr Gary Beven serves as the Chief of the Space Medicine Operations Division at the Johnson Space Center in Houston where he leads all medical support for NASA’s human spaceflight program. Dr Beven’s team of NASA flight surgeons, biomedical engineers, psychologists, space radiation physicists and scientists serve the needs of the NASA Astronaut Corps to enable human exploration of space, including the International Space Station, Commercial Crew, Commercial Low Earth Orbit, and Artemis Programs.
A specialist in the behavioral aspects of human spaceflight, Dr Beven has the longest tenure as an aerospace psychiatrist in NASA’s history, serving as the aerospace psychiatrist for over 50 long duration International Space Station expeditions to date. Dr Beven has also served as the aerospace psychiatry lead for 5 NASA astronaut selection cycles and as a consultant for 2 Canadian Space Agency astronaut selection campaigns.
Dr Beven received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Colorado at Boulder and a Doctor of Medicine degree from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. He interned at the Cleveland Clinic, underwent residency training in psychiatry at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, performed a fellowship in Forensic Psychiatry at the University of Florida College of Medicine and was trained in aerospace medicine at the USAF School of Aerospace Medicine. Dr Beven is a retired US Air Force Lt Colonel and USAF flight surgeon with 24 years of military service. He is board certified in psychiatry and forensic psychiatry, a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives, a Certified Physician Executive, and a Fellow of the Aerospace Medical Association.
