178 Family Medicine Grand Rounds: "Guidance for Patients with Unintended Pregnancy for Primary Care" (032216)

Dallas, TX US
March 22, 2016

This activity provides an opportunity to review and present what is relevant to primary care and advance experience about up to date information applicable to day-to-day practice. Unintended pregnancies and abortion are common in America, with 1 in 3 women having an abortion by the age of 45, according to the Guttmacher Institute. These women will often present to their Family Physician for a pregnancy test and counseling. Therefore, every Family Physician or Primary care physician needs to be prepared to handle this issue and be able to counsel a woman on her pregnancy test results, as well as pregnancy, adoption and abortion options.

This Grand Rounds focuses on these things and additionally explores the ethics behind helping patients make this important decision. The ethical tenants of medical care are reviewed as well as conscientious refusal and conscientious provision of services, as they pertain to abortion services. This is a controversial topic, but our responsibility is to the care of our patients and their safety and autonomy. Every primary care physician needs to be able to navigate this issue with some ease and a strong base of knowledge.
