Abstract: Using case examples, this presentation will explore the normative dimensions of medical decision-making on behalf of children. A framework of six inter-related principles will be offered to define the contours of moral agency and obligation in pediatric decision-making, including authority principles, guidance principles, intervention principles, and relationship principles. In particular, the role of "reasonableness" and reason-giving will be discussed as it relates to both decisions about state intervention on parental decisions and about shared decision-making conversations.
