Purpose and Content

The purpose of this talk is to review the differential diagnosis and approach to thrombocytopenia with a focus on thrombocytopenic emergencies.

The target audience are providers who care for hospitalized patients

 

Educational Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the participant should be able to:

  1. Understand the differential for thrombocytopenia based on clinical context and peripheral blood smear findings
  2. Identify thrombocytopenic emergencies, including thrombotic microangiopathies, immune thrombocytopenia, drug-induced thrombocytopenia, and disseminated intravascular coagulation
  3. Implement the initial diagnostic workup and management of thrombocytopenic emergencies
