Abstract: Clinical advocacy on behalf of patients is a long-standing core value across health professions, but the imperative for clinicians to participate in public advocacy is not universally accepted. In this presentation, Matthew Wynia, M.D., M.P.H., takes on an increasingly unavoidable question: Given the tide of public opinion and policies against scientific research and evidence, medical expertise, public health, health equity, and human rights, are physicians ethically obligated to engage publicly to defend these values? This thought-provoking session, based upon a 2025 article that he co-authored in The Lancet, will challenge attendees to consider their roles in protecting their patients and profession.
