Martin Giesecke, M.D.
Martin Giesecke is a cardiovascular anesthesiologist at Houston Methodist Hospital in the Texas Medical Center, Houston, Texas. Dr. Giesecke grew up in Irving, Texas. He graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 1981, with a BA in Biology. He earned his Medical Doctorate from the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in Galveston, Texas in 1985. He completed his anesthesiology training at UTMB and Texas Heart Institute in 1989. His first academic appointment--Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Texas Medical School, Houston--came in April 1991, when he joined the private practice of Arthur S. Keats, Associates at Texas Heart Institute and St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital in April 1991. He eventually joined the Department of Anesthesiology at Baylor College of Medicine as an Associate Professor in 2005. After eighteen years of practice at Texas Heart Institute, in 2009, Dr. Giesecke moved to Dallas, Texas to join the faculty in the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Management at UTSouthwestern Medical Center. At UTSouthwestern, Dr. Giesecke became a Vice Chairman and Professor of Anesthesiology; his responsibilities eventually grew to include the role of Vice Chairman of the University Hospitals. In 2015, Dr. Giesecke moved back to Houston, working for three years at the Heart and Vascular Institute at the University of Texas Health Science Center, Houston. In 2018, Dr. Giesecke moved to his current position at Houston Methodist Hospital. Dr. Giesecke has been active in the Texas Society of Anesthesiologists (TSA), the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA). He was Editor of the TSA Bulletin for twenty-one years and was President of the TSA (2012-2013). He was the Editor of the ASA Newsletter for two years and the ASA Monitor for four additional years. He was an Examiner for the American Board of Anesthesiology for twenty-eight years. He has also been active in the Texas Medical Association, the Harris County Medical Society, the Dallas County Medical Society, the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists, the Anesthesia History Association, and the Wood Library-Museum of Anesthesiology.
