Bernhard Riedel, MB ChB, FCA, FANZCA, FASE, GChPOM, MMed, MBA, PhD
Professor Bernhard Riedel is an academic anaesthesiologist and Director of Anaesthesia, Peri-operative Medicine & Pain Medicine at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, Melbourne. He holds a professorial appointment at the University of Melbourne.
He also served as Professor & Deputy Chair of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care at MD Anderson Cancer Center (USA), Professor of Cardiothoracic Anaesthesiology at Vanderbilt University (USA) and Consultant Anaesthetist at the Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Trust with an honorary lectureship at the University of London (UK).
Bernhard’s research tackles the “hidden pandemic” of post-operative complications and mortality. His group pioneers enhanced risk stratification and prehabilitation strategies, and—in the field of onco-anaesthesia—investigates how peri-operative adrenergic-inflammatory responses and anaesthetic technique influence immune function and cancer progression.
He has secured 90 competitive grants (>$ 30m), including eight federal awards, and authored more than 250 peer-reviewed papers—appearing in The Lancet, New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, Cancer Research, Nature Reviews and the British Journal of Anaesthesia—garnering over 10,000 citations. His editorial contributions include three textbooks, notably Acute Care of the Cancer Patient.
The audience keep giving him second chances, and as such, Bernhard has been reinvited to deliver more than 300 invited lectures, 14 of them plenary or keynote addresses at major national and international congresses. He has supervised or examined 15 higher-degree (MMed/PhD) candidates.
His leadership and mentorship have been recognised with >50 personal and team awards, including multiple Victorian Public Healthcare Awards for excellence in clinical service, quality improvement and research.
