Maria Hernandez, MD
I am a first-year Cardiovascular Disease fellow at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas. I completed my Internal Medicine residency at Northwestern University in Chicago and my medical degree at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth in Houston. My clinical and research interests focus on cardiovascular disease prevention and implementation, with a focus on addressing health care gaps in high-risk patient populations. My prior work includes cardiovascular disease outcomes in Hispanics/Latinos, specifically looking at the NHANES registry examining cardiac and socioeconomic risk factors for heart failure in Hispanic adults, and ongoing manuscripts on heart failure risk profiles and post-cardiac transplantation outcomes in the Hispanic population. My current research is focused on evaluating the association between Spanish-language preference and statin use among Hispanic patients with type 2 diabetes, established atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, or high-risk primary prevention indications, with the goal of identifying language as an actionable, system-level target for closing prevention gaps. I am involved in several groups within the American College of Cardiology, including the Hispanic/Latinx Cardiology Program, and I serve on the Health Equity and Advocacy Committee, where I help plan community outreach events focused on cardiovascular education and screening for populations with limited access to care.
