Emily Wong, MD

Emily Wong is an Infectious diseases fellow in the Department of Internal Medicine and Division of Infectious Diseases and Geographic medicine.
Originally from Toronto, Canada, Dr. Wong is a native Canadian who earned her Bachelor of Science in Human kinetics and physiology. She then earned her medical degree at the University College Cork in Ireland where she graduated with honors. She moved to Dallas, Texas to complete Internal Medicine residency training at UT Southwestern where she developed an interest in Infectious Diseases. Utilizing her international viewpoint on the effects of socioeconomic status and healthcare, she dedicated additional time in studying the care of immunocompromised hosts. She then went on to become an Infectious Disease fellow, working in the Parkland ACCESS clinic with patients living with HIV and opportunistic infections. However, her interests, while still focused on the immunocompromised, became more directed towards infections in solid organ transplant recipients and hematologic malignancies. In July 2024, she became the first Transplant ID fellow at UTSW.
Dr. Wong’s research focus is on antimicrobial stewardship and is working with the Parkland stewardship team on a hospital wide urinalysis reflex order that has had immense healthcare cost savings for a safety net hospital. She hopes to bring her interest in stewardship over to the transplant setting.
As a former UTSW resident and current fellow, she also continues her role as a medical educator. She loves working with trainees on service and always takes the time to break down difficult topics like infections in CAR-T, multidrug resistance, and opportunistic infections.
During her free time, Dr. Wong enjoys traveling to new countries, spending time with her two cats, and can often be found at the rock-climbing gym.
