Ravindra Sarode

Ravi Sarode, MD, is a Tenured Professor of Pathology and Internal Medicine (Hematology/Oncology), the Chief of Pathology, and the Medical Director of Clinical Laboratory Services at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. He is also the Medical Director of the Division of Transfusion Medicine and Hemostasis. He holds the John H. Childers, MD, Professorship in Pathology. He is a Co-Editor-in-Chief of “Transfusion and Apheresis Science”. His research interests include TTP, HIT, RBCx, APS, anticoagulation monitoring and reversal, rebalanced hemostasis in cirrhosis, and restrictive transfusions to avoid patient harm. He is the past president of the American Society for Apheresis and one of the original writers of the ASFA guidelines. He served on the “Advisory Committee on Blood/Tissue Safety and Availability,” advising the Secretary of the United States Department of Health and Human Services. He was honored as the Choosing Wisely champion for his work reducing unnecessary thrombophilia testing at the 2016 American Society of Hematology meeting in San Diego. He was invited to write anticoagulation reversal guidelines by the American Heart Association (2016-17), the American College of Emergency Physicians (2018-2019), and by the Society for Interventional Radiology (2017-18) on hemostasis and transfusion issues before any intervention. He has published more than 240 original articles and many book chapters. As an international coordinating principal investigator, he has completed two randomized clinical trials (RCTs) on warfarin reversal: one comparing 4-factor PCC with plasma, and another comparing one PCC with another. He is currently the coordinating international investigator for an RCT comparing low and high doses of 4F-PCC to treat major bleeds in patients on factor Xa inhibitors. He is passionate about educating medical professionals on the appropriate use of blood components and laboratory testing to avoid patient harm, use limited resources judiciously, and reduce healthcare costs. He serves on the board of directors of “The Foundation for Women and Girls with Blood Disorders.” In April 2026, the American Society for Apheresis bestowed the “Francis S. Morrison Memorial Lectureship Award” on him.
