Teresa Chan, MD, MHPE, MBA

Dr. Teresa M. Chan, a notable figure in medical education and emergency medicine, currently serves as the Founding Dean of the Toronto Metropolitan University School of Medicine and Vice-President of Medical Affairs. Her academic journey includes an Honours Bachelor of Science from the University of Toronto (2003), a Bachelor of Education from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, University of Toronto (2004), a Doctor of Medicine from Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University (2008), and completing her Emergency Medicine Residency at McMaster University under the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in 2013. Further enhancing her expertise, Dr. Chan obtained a Master of Health Professionals Education from the University of Illinois at Chicago (2016) and a Master of Business Administration from the University of the People (2023).
Dr. Chan's professional journey is marked by significant roles, including Associate Dean of Continuing Professional Development and Associate Professor in the Division of Emergency Medicine at McMaster University. Her tenure at McMaster also saw her contributing as a Clinician Scientist with MERIT (McMaster Education, Research, Innovation and Theory) and as a practicing emergency physician with Hamilton Health Sciences since 2013. A leader in educational innovation, Dr. Chan has overseen numerous projects in medical education, authoring over 200 peer-reviewed publications and leading more than 50 research teams. She has been pivotal in developing new teaching methods, including technology-enhanced learning and serious games, notably contributing to the free open access medical education movement and the development of the educational board game GridlockED.
An advocate for social justice in healthcare, Dr. Chan applies her educational background to her practice, focusing on patient dignity and societal challenges in healthcare. Serving on the very frontlines of healthcare in the emergency department, Dr. Chan is committed to serve those who are most in need when they need it - but also believes that it is important for us to find systems-level and preventive healthcare solutions.
Dr. Chan's leadership extends to editorial and committee roles in various medical education organizations and as an honorary Adjunct Associate Professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, underlining her commitment to advancing medical education and practice.
