Frederick Nucifora, Ph.D., D.O., M.H.S.
Dr. Frederick C. Nucifora Jr. is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where he directs the Adult Schizophrenia Clinic and Clozapine Clinic and co-directs the Precision Medicine Center of Excellence for Schizoaffective Disorders. He is a psychiatrist and neurobiologist whose research integrates clinical phenotyping, neurophysiology, molecular neuroscience, and patient-derived cellular models to better understand the biological mechanisms underlying schizophrenia, particularly treatment-resistant and ultra-treatment-resistant schizophrenia.
Dr. Nucifora’s work has made important contributions to understanding disrupted protein homeostasis and protein aggregation in neuropsychiatric disorders. His research demonstrated that mutations in the schizophrenia-linked gene NPAS3 can lead to protein aggregation and dysfunction, and his group subsequently identified increased protein insolubility and ubiquitin-positive protein aggregates in subsets of patients with schizophrenia, supporting the concept of biologically distinct subtypes of the illness. His earlier work in Huntington’s disease and Parkinson’s disease helped establish links between protein aggregation, transcriptional dysfunction, and neuronal toxicity.
In addition to his translational neuroscience research, Dr. Nucifora has played a national leadership role in advancing care for treatment-resistant schizophrenia. He was part of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration initiative that developed the concept of Clozapine Centers of Excellence, which was later adopted by the American Psychiatric Association Clinical Support System for Serious Mental Illness.
