Eduardo Mortani Barbosa Jr, MD, MBA

Dr. Eduardo Mortani Barbosa Jr. is an Associate Professor of Radiology at the University of Pennsylvania, standing faculty at the Perelman School of Medicine (CE/tenure track), double board certified in diagnostic radiology (American Board of Radiology; Brazilian College of Radiology) with subspecialty expertise in cardiothoracic CT, MR, PET/CT, and interventional procedures (CT-guided thoracic biopsies). He serves as director of thoracic CT modality and is responsible for CT protocols and structured report templates. He has an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, one of the top business schools in the world, where he graduated with honors and as a Palmer Scholar, the highest honor bestowed by Wharton for extraordinarily high and consistent academic performance (top 5% of the class). Recently, he has been appointed interim chief of the Cardiothoracic Imaging section at Penn. In May of 2025, he will be awarded Fellowship of the American College of Radiology (FACR).
His academic interests include medicine, computer science, biology, physics, business, and economics, which led him to lead translational research integrating cardiothoracic imaging, artificial intelligence, and health services research.
His research interests, which are funded by government, foundation and industry grants, include: 1) artificial intelligence applied to quantitative and functional imaging for: diagnostic and prognostic assessment of diffuse lung diseases (COPD, ILD, BOS), predictive statistical modeling of risk of malignancy in thoracic lesions, modeling of risk of complications in CT guided biopsies, assessment of incidental findings in cardiothoracic imaging, and imaging of pulmonary embolism and pulmonary hypertension 2) health services research: assessment of determinants of follow up of incidental lung nodules (including racial/ethnic and socioeconomic disparities), evaluation of clinical and socioeconomic determinants of patient adherence to lung cancer screening, optimization of CT protocols for reducing radiation dose and improving image quality, intelligent structured reporting and value creation in radiology.
His teaching background includes numerous didactic and scientific lectures at prestigious national and international meetings, such as the RSNA, ECR, ESTI, STR, NASCI, JPR, and SNM annual conferences, and invited lectures at multiple national and international academic institutions. He has served as course coordinator for the Research module at the JPR 2024, the third largest radiology conference in the world, representing the RSNA.
