Dmitry Novikov, PhD

Dmitry S. Novikov is an Associate Professor of Radiology at NYU Langone Health. He obtained his PhD in theoretical condensed matter physics from MIT in 2003, and developed models of transport in disordered semiconductors, nanotubes and graphene as a postdoctoral associate at Princeton and Yale. Drawn to MRI by the similarities between structurally disordered biological tissues and electronic materials, Dmitry joined NYU Radiology in 2008, where he cofounded MRI Biophysics group that develops modern physics-based approaches to tissue microstructure MR imaging with diffusion and relaxometry. Dmitry pioneered scattering approach to diffusion in realistic tissue geometries that resulted in models of time-dependent diffusion in brain and body, introduced random matrix theory-based methods to denoise multiparametric MR images, and has recently applied the representation theory of the SO(3) group of rotations, the fundamental symmetry of our space, to classifying the invariants of diffusion signal and to drawing fiber orientations in four dimensions. Inspired by building bridges between MRI and basic sciences such as physics and biology, in 2019, Dmitry cofounded the Gordon research conference series on Tissue Microstructure Imaging. In 2024 he was elected as ISMRM Fellow “for seminal contributions to the understanding of tissue microstructure using diffusion MRI and for the development of key enabling tools for microstructural imaging.”
