Sam (John) Sum-Ping

Dr. Sum-Ping is a graduate of the University of Manchester, England, and a Fellow of the Royal College of Anesthetists. He completed his post-graduate training at the University of Manchester training program in England. He was also a Lecturer in Anesthesia at the University of Manchester and was a Visiting Professor at the University of Iowa College of Medicine in Iowa City, Iowa. Dr. Sum-Ping is a Diplomat of the American Board of Anesthesiology and has close to 45 years of clinical and academic experience. His research interests include identification of proper endotracheal tube placement, hemodynamic monitoring and sedation in the critically ill patients. He has authored more than 50 publications in the professional medical literature, several chapters in well-respected anesthesia and critical care textbooks and received awards for clinical and research excellence. Since December 2002, John Sum-Ping has served as Chief, Anesthesiology & Pain Management Service for Veterans Affairs North Texas Health Care System (VANTHCS). In February 2005, Dr. Sum-Ping became the Acting Chief of Staff for VANTHCS that covers VA medical facilities in Dallas, Bonham, and Fort Worth and remained in that position until the middle of 2006. He also chaired the Search Committee for appointment of the Chief of Staff. Prior to arriving to VANTHCS, Dr. Sum-Ping was Medical Director of the Surgical Intensive Care Unit at Durham VA Medical Center in North Carolina and Associate Professor at Duke University Medical Center. In addition to his responsibilities at VANTHCS, Dr. Sum-Ping was a Full Professor and Vice Chair of Anesthesiology & Pain Management at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas. He was also a member of the Faculty Senate and serves as a member of the UT Dean’s Promotion and Tenure Committee. He was a member of Change Control Board for the Laboratory System Re-engineering Project. He was also a member of several patient VISN 17 Committees, including Surgical Infections Performance Improvement Team, Clinical Practice Board and Multidisciplinary Operations Board. In 2004, Dr. Sum-Ping was elected President of the Association of VA Anesthesiologists and in 2005, he was appointed to be a member and then Chair of the Field Advisory Committee for National Anesthesia Service. He then served as Interim Director of National Anesthesia Service from 2010 to 2012 and was appointed as Director from 2012 to 2020. His interests include continuous quality improvement, patient safety and succession planning. He is now retired and has been appointed as Professor Emeritus. He has mentored and coached many service chiefs and the current National Director of Anesthesiology at VA Central Office. He looks forward to coaching colleagues in all aspects of professional and personal life.
