Jay Brinton Lusk, MD, MBA
Jay B. Lusk, M.D., M.B.A., is a preventive medicine physician and clinical data scientist who joined UT Southwestern in 2026. He holds appointments in Neurology, Internal Medicine, and Health Economics, Systems, and Policy and is a member of the O’Donnell Brain Institute.
His research aims to prevent chronic disease across the life course and promote heart, brain, and metabolic health. He brings together three approaches: rigorous causal inference in observational data, development and evaluation of artificial intelligence tools, and pragmatic controlled trials. His work uses routinely collected health data to evaluate treatments and identify opportunities for prevention, while advancing clinical tools and studies that can help health systems learn from everyday care.
Dr. Lusk sees patients in the Aston clinic. His clinical interests include hypertension, obesity, cardiovascular risk reduction, and brain health promotion, particularly for people living with multiple chronic conditions. He earned his medical and business degrees at Duke University, completed an internal medicine internship at Duke, and trained in preventive medicine and public health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he served as co-chief resident.
He has led interdisciplinary research education through Duke’s Bass Connections program and mentored trainees in medicine, statistics, data science, and population health. Through committee roles with the American Heart Association, Alzheimer’s Association, and American College of Preventive Medicine, he contributes to work connecting rigorous evidence with prevention and clinical practice. His mentoring emphasizes clinically meaningful questions, transparent methods, and research that can improve care.
