Barbara A. Brown-Elliott MS, MT(ASCP)SM FAAM is currently a Professor of Cellular and Molecular Biology and Medicine and Associate Director of the Mycobacteria/Nocardia Clinical and Research Laboratory at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler (UTHSCT), UT Tyler School of Medicine. She has supervised the UTHSCT laboratory since 1988. She was a previous study coordinator at the UTHSCT for early clinical and laboratory trials of clarithromycin, azithromycin, and tigecycline in patients with nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM). She is the author and/or co-author of more than 350 peer-reviewed articles and chapters on NTM and Nocardia with over 150 publications on macrolides, antimicrobial susceptibility testing and resistance mechanisms including the recognition and characterization of several erm genes in NTM. She has been a member of the ASM since 1978 and is a frequent speaker at local, national, and international meetings. She is a member of the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) Antimycobacterial Susceptibility Subcommittee and the current Working Group for document revisions and is Vice Chair of the CLSI Committee on Laboratory Detection of Mycobacteria. She is a recipient of the Becton Dickinson Gardner Middlebrook Award in Mycobacteriology, the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) Scherago-Rubin Award for outstanding clinical microbiologist in 2013 and an ASM Distinguished Lecturer from 2019-2020. In 2023 she was inducted as a Fellow into the honorary Academy of Microbiology.
