EM1608C "Precision Medicine: Time for a Second Opinion?" (IM GR-081216)

The purpose of this lecture is to review the history and concepts underpinning the “Precision Medicine” paradigm. The concepts will be treated as hypotheses and the results of recent studies will serve as “pilot work” to stimulate discussion about the paradigm in general and its ultimate impact on a number of elements of the larger health care environment now and in the future. The conclusion is that Precision Medicine is being oversold and is part of a classic hype cycle. This message will be delivered in an intentionally provocative manner designed to stimulate discussion.

Target Audience

UT Southwestern faculty, fellows, residents and medical students, community physicians, nurse clinicians, physician assistants and nurses.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the participant should be able to:

  • Understand that a “genetic revolution in medicine” was predicted in the 1990s based on concepts from the Human Genome Project.
  • Critically evaluate these predictions and their rebranding as Precision Medicine in light of data that has emerged over the last 10-20 years.
  • Ask critical question to national leaders in research and academic medicine about the validity and utility of the Precision Medicine paradigm.
