EM1610E "Statins for Primary Prevention: A Little Data for a Lot of People" (IM GR-100716)

This Internal Medicine Grand Rounds will review the evidence regarding statin use in the primary prevention setting, particularly data that concerns using LDL-C thresholds, and intermediate-term risk assessments to guide statin therapy in this population.

UT Southwestern faculty, fellows, residents and medical students, community physicians, nurse clinicians, physician assistants and nurses.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the participant should be able to:

  • Understand the significance of the association of elevated serum levels of atherogenic lipoprotein species, including LDL-C, in determining ASCVD risk, independent of other risk factors.
  • Understand the importance of estimating 10 year absolute risks in determining an individual’s eligbility for statins, and the strengths and weaknesses of the ACC/AHA Pooled Cohort Equations.
  • Be familiar with additional clinical tools, including life time risk estimates, coronary artery calcium, and C-reactive protein, that may help to better risk stratify individuals.
