EM1611D "Fat Lips and Swollen Throats: What are the Facts?" (IM GR-110416)

The presentation will review the evaluation and treatment of angioedema. Specifically the differential diagnosis of angioedema with and without urticaria will be presented. The known mediator mechanisms will be presented. A brief discussion of each of the common types of angioedema including diagnostic testing and treatment will follow.

In the second half of the presentation the focus will be on angioedema without urticaria with specific attention to the hereditary types. Appropriate diagnostic evaluation strategies will be discussed along with a presentation of current and emerging therapies

At the conclusion of this activity, the participant should be able to:

  • Differentiate the causes of angioedema based on pathophysiology and response to therapy.
  • Describe an evidence-based and cost-effective approach to diagnosis of angioedema.
  • Summarize advantages disadvantages and optimal use of current and emerging strategies for acute and long term management of angioedema
