The purpose of this Internal Medicine Grand Rounds is to provide internists and Internal Medicine subspecialists with an overview of common issues that arise in patients who have undergone bariatric surgery, including a simplified approach to nutritional screening and supplementation.
Target Audience
UT Southwestern faculty, fellows, residents and medical students, community physicians, nurse clinicians, physician assistants and nurses.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, the participant should be able to:
- Describe the increasing trend in obesity and the role of bariatric surgery
- Discuss weight regain after bariatric surgery
- Review post-bariatric gastrointestinal symptoms and dumping syndromes
- Identify those at risk for nutritional deficiencies and formulate treatment plans
