The purpose of this presentation is to discuss the utility of coronary artery calcium scoring in cardiovascular risk assessment and its potential role in shared-decision making between clinicians and patients in the primary prevention of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the participant should be able to:

  • Describe the association of coronary artery calcification with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease

  • Understand the potential role of coronary artery calcium in primary prevention and shared decision making under the current paradigm of the 2013 ACC/AHA guidelines
  • Identify areas for future investigation of coronary artery calcium scoring as it relates to cardiovascular disease risk
