EM1804D "Colorectal Cancer Screening: Issues in 2018” (IM GR-041318)

I will review the demographics, genetics, and risk factors for colorectal cancer (CRC).  I will discuss the rationale for new guidelines for CRC screening, examine advantages and limitations of various screening options, and explore whether there is a “preferred” method of screening test.

The talk will highlight the growing problem of CRC before age 50, and implications in clinical practice. Quality metrics for screening programs will be discussed.

Target Audience

UT Southwestern faculty, fellows, residents and medical students, community physicians, nurse clinicians, physician assistants and nurses.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the participant should be able to:

  • Understand the demographics of colorectal cancer (CRC) and the impact of these demographics on screening recommendations
  • Understand risk factors for CRC, and ways to mitigate risk
  • Be aware of new data on early onset CRC, possible causes, and the implications in clinical practice
