EM1904E "Acute Kidney Injury – a 2019 Update" (IM GR-041219)

The purpose of this presentation is to increase awareness of recent developments relating to the detection and incidence of acute kidney injury as well as the effectiveness of interventions for its prevention and treatment. Epidemiologic studies of AKI incidence and mortality using new diagnostic criteria will be reviewed and contrasted. Evidence for the effectiveness of preventive strategies including AKI alerts, care bundles, ischemic preconditioning and N-acetylcysteine will be reviewed.

Target Audience

UT Southwestern faculty, fellows, residents and medical students, community physicians, nurse clinicians, physician assistants and nurses.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the participant should be able to:

  • Discuss methodologic challenges associated with epidemiologic studies of AKI.
  • Discuss the impact of electronic AKI alerts on patient outcomes.
  • Discuss the impact of early and intensive dialysis on AKI outcomes.
