EM2006C "Effect of COVID-19 on Incidence and Management of Kidney Disease" (IM GR-060520)

The purpose is to review the incidence, pathophysiology, and risk factors for Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) in patients hospitalized with COVID-19, as well as the challenges for management of acute dialysis for AKI and chronic dialysis for ESRD in the COVID-19 pandemic.

Target Audience

UT Southwestern faculty, fellows, residents and medical students, community physicians, nurse clinicians, physician assistants and nurses.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the participant should be able to:

  • Describe the incidence and risk factors for AKI in patients hospitalized with COVID-19 and association with outcomes
  • Describe the underlying pathophysiology of AKI in patients with COVID-19
  • Discuss management of AKI and special challenges with Renal Replacement Therapy in patients hospitalized with COVID-19.
  • Identify presentation of ESRD patients with COVID-19.
  • Understand challenges of managing dialysis patients with COVID-19.
