EM2007E “Faculty Growth, Development and Sustenance in Academic Medicine: Moving from Merry-Go-Round to Escalator” (IM GR-073120)

Purpose: This presentation will examine the development of academic medicine and its progress, particularly as it relates to UT Southwestern.

Overview:Academic medicine has evolved over the last century since its renaissance after the Flexner report. This presentation will look at changes in academic medicine and how they have affected underrepresented groups, including women and minorities, particularly with regards to promotion. We will then examine how changes in the clinical staff at UT Southwestern have affected the promotion process and identify the effects on UT Southwestern as an institution. Finally, we will conclude by examining how we can improve faculty development to augment the vitality of our faculty.

Target Audience

UT Southwestern faculty, fellows, residents and medical students, community physicians, nurse clinicians, physician assistants and nurses.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the participant should be able to:

  • Describe the history and state of faculty development and promotion in academic medicine
  • Identify gaps and initiatives at UT Southwestern with regard to faculty development
  • Suggest measures to improve the future of faculty development and promotion in academic medicine
