EM2010H "Updates on the Treatment of COVID-19"

The purpose of this presentation will be to review the latest scientific literature and guidelines regarding the pharmacologic treatments for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The presentation will provide a brief overview of the stages and classification of COVID-19, followed by a evidence-based medicine review of the available literature on the proven or proposed treatments for this disease with commentary on how to apply this data to clinical practice. Finally, a series of overarching lessons for the scientific community will be highlighted based on this review of drug discovery for COVID-19.

Target Audience

UT Southwestern faculty, fellows, residents and medical students, community physicians, nurse clinicians, physician assistants and nurses.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the participant should be able to:

  • List the different phases of COVID-19 and which classes of treatment are likely to be most beneficial in each stage.
  • Explain at least two reasons why randomized controlled trials are necessary to determine the efficacy of a new COVID-19 treatment.
  • Describe a “sensible medicine” approach to the evaluation and clinical use of proposed new COVID-19 treatments.
