EM2106E "Metabolism and Nutrition in Sepsis: A Need for Precision Medicine" (IM GR-060421)

The purpose of the presentation is to discuss the management of metabolism and nutrition in critically ill patients with sepsis. The presentation will review the lessons from and limitations of clinical trials targeting metabolism and nutrition in the critically ill. Preclinical approaches to understanding the role of metabolic derangements in sepsis will be discussed.

UT Southwestern faculty, fellows, residents and medical students, community physicians, nurse clinicians, physician assistants and nurses.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the participant should be able to:

  • Discuss the lessons from and limitations of recent clinical trials targeting nutritional support in critically ill patients.
  • Identify potential harms of high protein feeding in patients with sepsis.
  • Identify potential harms of excess dietary carbohydrates and the resulting obligate insulin needs in patients with bacterial sepsis.
