Despite a quality of culture over the past 20 years, there are still substantial opportunities for improvement of our hospital system in the domains of safety, equitability, effectiveness, efficiency, timeliness, and patient centeredness. Widespread adoption of technology is now allowing implementation of models of care with potential to substantially improve the quality of acute care in the United States. This lecture will discuss two of these innovations, telemedicine and Hospital at Home.

Target Audience

UT Southwestern faculty, fellows, residents and medical students, community physicians, nurse clinicians, physician assistants and nurses.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the participant should be able to:

  • Assess the US hospital system in the context of the Six Principles of Healthcare Quality
  • Consider the impacts of telehealth technologies on the quality of acute care
  • Discuss the current state of Hospital at Home, an acute care model occurring outside of the traditional hospital setting
