EM2303E "Minimally Invasive Treatments Options for Benign Thyroid Nodules" (IM GR-031723)
Purpose and Overview
Thermal and chemical ablation techniques for the non-surgical treatment of thyroid nodules have been used internationally for decades, with only relatively recent interest and acceptance in the United States.
This lecture will discuss minimally invasive therapies, particularly ethanol ablation and radiofrequency ablation, as an alterative to surgical management; and describe our clinical experience using these techniques to treat symptomatic benign thyroid nodules.

UT Southwestern faculty, fellows, residents and medical students, community physicians, nurse clinicians, physician assistants and nurses.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, the participant should be able to:
- Recognize the factors that lead patients to choose non-surgical treatment options for symptomatic benign thyroid nodules.
- Understand the basic concepts and application of chemical and thermal ablation in the treatment of thyroid nodules.
- Describe the expected outcomes in patients who choose ethanol ablation or radio frequency ablation for the treatment of their thyroid nodules.
