EM2405B “Risky Business: Elevated Cardiovascular Risk in Lupus” (IM GR-050324)

Purpose and Overview

In this lecture, I will introduce the complex autoimmune disease, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and discuss its basic pathogenesis and epidemiology and then review the multifactorial etiology of elevated cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk among patients with SLE. I will review the differential diagnosis of a patient with SLE presenting with chest pain, and outline a novel approach to CVD risk stratification and management of CVD risk factors for primary prevention.

Target Audience

UT Southwestern faculty, fellows, residents and medical students, community physicians, nurse clinicians, physician assistants and nurses.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the participant should be able to:

  • Characterize the epidemiology of SLE and the populations differentially affected by SLE and by increased relative risk of CVD among people with SLE.
  • Define the many factors leading to increased CVD risk in patients with SLE
  • Identify strategies for CVD risk stratification and management among patients with SLE
