Purpose and Overview
This lecture aims to review the changing demographics of the adult congenital heart disease population over the past sixty years, and to highlight what factors have led to the successful treatment of congenital heart lesions that have allowed the majority of children with cardiac defects to grow up to become adults with congenital heart disease. We will then discuss the current challenges in caring for these patients, and potential solutions for the problems facing this complex patient population.

UT Southwestern faculty, fellows, residents and medical students, community physicians, nurse clinicians, physician assistants and nurses.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, the participant should be able to:
- Describe how the demographics of congenital heart disease patients has changed over the past 60 years.
- Distinguish what factors have led to the improved survival of adult congenital heart disease patients.
- Identify the main challenges facing adult congenital heart disease patients today, and how to potentially overcome them.
