EM2512E "Pak Center for Mineral Metabolism: Integrating Patient Care and Discovery" (IM GR-121925)

Purpose and Overview

This Medicine Grand Rounds session will present the process of integrating patient care with ongoing research conducted in the Center for Mineral Metabolism and Clinical Research. The presentation will provide an overview of the usefulness of disease-specific patient registries. It will focus on the clinical problem of osteoporotic fractures occurring in patients with cancer, chronic kidney disease, or prior hip fracture, review the underlying mechanisms, and highlight the role of novel techniques assessing bone strength to personalize treatment plans.

Target Audience

UT Southwestern faculty, fellows, residents and medical students, community physicians, nurse clinicians, physician assistants and nurses.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the participant should be able to:

  • recognize that cancer survivors are at increased risk for fracture, and identify some of the underlying mechanisms.
  • recognize the strengths of a systems biology approach to address the complexity and high mortality of abnormal mineral metabolism in individuals with chronic kidney disease.
  • understand the healthcare impact of hip fractures, and recognize the limitations of current evaluation, treatment, and follow-up of patients post-hip fracture.
