EM2608F “Consumed by Disease: Insights from Cancer Cachexia”
Purpose and Overview...
This lecture provides a translational overview of cancer cachexia, integrating clinical observations with mechanistic laboratory studies to understand why patients with cancer develop progressive weight loss and tissue wasting. Using complementary epidemiologic, human, and experimental approaches, the presentation highlights the clinical impact and early occurrence of cachexia, identifies tumor-derived and host pathways that drive adipose and muscle wasting, and illustrates how discoveries involving STK11/LKB1, GDF15, and cytokine-mediated signaling in tissues can reveal biomarkers and therapeutic targets. Ultimately, the lecture demonstrates how the interplay between bedside observations and bench research can advance the diagnosis, mechanistic understanding, and potential treatment of cancer cachexia.
