Office of Continuing Education

The mission of the continuing medical education program at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center (UTSW) is to promote the continuing professional development of physicians to deliver the safest, highest quality, and most effective patient care.

Purpose
The program fulfills this mission by conducting appropriate assessments of learner needs and developing effective strategies designed to change competence, performance, or patient outcomes.

Interprofessional Continuing Education (IPCE) Approach:
In support of UT Southwestern’s mission to promote health and a healthy society that enables individuals to achieve their full potential, the Interprofessional Continuing Education (IPCE) approach provides education for the healthcare team, with expected results articulated in terms of changes in skills, strategy, healthcare team performance, and/or patient outcomes.

Consistent with UTSW’s commitment to educate, discover, and heal, the IPCE approach supports collaborative learning across the healthcare team by developing educational activities that strengthen communication, teamwork, shared decision-making, and coordinated patient care. Given the complexity of delivering care to our patients and communities, our programs integrate input from a variety of sources, including patient councils, patient representatives, research findings, faculty expertise, learners, healthcare team members, community needs, and institutional priorities.

Through evidence-based, outcomes-focused education, the IPCE approach advances meaningful improvements in team competence, team performance, care delivery, and patient-centered outcomes across the healthcare system, while reflecting UTSW’s values of excellence, innovation, teamwork, and compassion.
