Overview
The purpose of this presentation is review the use of corticosteroids including their discovery, mechanisms of action, clinical use in systemic lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis, side effects and potential organ damage with the chronic use.
Target Audience
UT Southwestern faculty, fellows, residents and medical students, community physicians, nurse clinicians, physician assistants and nurses.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, the participant should be able to:
- Recognize that corticosteroids have genomic and non-genomic mechanisms of action.
- List the clinical use of corticosteroids in systemic lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis.
- Discuss the potential side effects of the clinical use of corticosteroids.
