Avery Nathens, MD PhD MPH
Dr. Nathens is the Chief of Surgery and Medical Director of Trauma at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto, Canada’s largest trauma center, and Professor of Surgery at the University of Toronto, with cross appointments at the Institute of Clinical Evaluative Sciences (ICES) and the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation. He is also practicing trauma surgeon and epidemiologist with a focus on trauma system design and trauma quality improvement. He has been working with the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma since 2005, providing oversight of the National Trauma DataBank, which was the foundation of the the ACS Trauma Quality Improvement Program (ACS TQIP). He has been Director of ACS TQIP since its inception in 2010, with now over 800 hospitals across North America. He has held the role of Medical Director Trauma Quality Programs at the ACS since 2016. He holds an endowed chair in trauma research and has provided mentorship to over 30 graduate students. His research activity has been recognized through several awards and through over 400 publications in journals such as the NEJM, JAMA, and Lancet. He has been funded through the NIH, CDC and the Canadian Institutes for Health Research for most of his career.
