I have taken care of children chronically infected with hepatitis B (HBV) or hepatitis C (HCV) for over 20 years, and have participated in research to advance the understanding of and treatment for these viral infections for the same length of time. I have helped the Hepatitis B Foundation develop expert-opinion guidelines for the screening and treatment of children with HBV, and I and my research team have participated in most of the anti-viral treatment trials against HBV in children, consistently leading recruitment for many multi-center treatment trials. I am also a principle investigator in the NIH/NIDDK Hepatitis B Research Network (HBRN), where we have advanced the understanding of the epidemiology of pediatric HBV in North America, treatment options for infected children, and are investigating the unique immunological host-response of children and the resulting infectious phenotype. Similarly, for children infected with HCV, I and my research team have advanced the understanding of the disease pathogenesis and have led both corporate and NIH/NIDDK-sponsored treatment trials against the virus.
