Alex Kane Bio

Alex A. Kane, M.D., F.A.C.S., F.A.A.P., is a Professor and Vice-Chairman in the Department of Plastic Surgery at University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, as well as the Division Director of the Pediatric Plastic and Craniofacial Surgery Program at Children’s Medical Center Dallas.  Dr. Kane is the holder of the Crystal Charity Ball Distinguish Chair Dr. Kane is board certified in plastic surgery.   

Dr. Kane’s clinical interests and expertise are craniofacial anomalies, cleft lip and palate, craniofacial synostosis, minimally invasive techniques in craniofacial surgery, advanced imaging techniques, craniofacial trauma, vascular anomalies and general pediatric plastic surgery.  His research interests are quantitative and functional imaging of cleft & craniofacial conditions.

Dr. Kane received his M.D. from Dartmouth Medical School.  He was a resident in plastic surgery at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine in Missouri.  He completed his fellowship in cleft lip, palate, and craniofacial surgery at Chang-Gung Memorial Hospital in Taipei and also a fellowship in craniofacial imaging at the National Laboratory for Diagnostic Radiology Research in Maryland.  He was the Associate Professor of Surgery at Washington University School of Medicine in Missouri, the Director of the Cleft Palate and Craniofacial Institute at St. Louis Children’s Hospital, and the Director of the Craniofacial Imaging Laboratory at Washington University School of Medicine from 2000 to 2010.

Dr. Kane received the Paul M. Weeks Resident Teaching Award from the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Washington University School of Medicine in 2010 and the Dr. Joseph B. Kimbrough Endowed Chair Section Chief of Pediatric Plastic Surgery at St. Louis Children’s Hospital in 2008.  In 2004 he invented the device for lengthening and reshaping bone by distraction osteogenesis which he received a patent for.
