Auwal M Abubakar was born on 20thJanuary, 1966 in Mayokila village, Leko District of Jada local government area of Adamawa State. He started his education at L.E.A. Primary School Lengdo in Jada Local Government of Adamawa State between 1973 and 1978. He was at the famous Government Secondary School, Ganye between 1978 and 1981. They were the pioneer set of students for the newly established science secondary schools in the former Gongola state and in form 3 in 1981 were sent to the Government Science Secondary School, Donga, and now Taraba state. He gained admission at the School of Basic Studies (A.B.U. Zaria) in 1983 and in 1984 was admitted to read medicine at the Faculty of Medicine, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria and graduated with MB BS degree in 1989.
He did the one-year internship at the Specialist Hospital Yola, Gongola State between 1989 and 1990 and the mandatory national youth service corps (NYSC) at the Rural Health Centre Kamba, Sokoto State as a Medical officer between 1990 and 1991.
Postgraduate training (Residency training) was at the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital, Sokoto, Sokoto state, University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, Ilorin, Kwara state for the junior residency training and Obafemi Awolowo Teaching Hospitals Complex, Ile-Ife, Osun state and the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Lagos, Lagos state for the senior residency training with specialization in Paediatric surgery. In 1999 this was culminated with the award of the Fellowship of the West African College of Surgeons (FWACS) in Paediatric Surgery. He was awarded the Fellowship of the International College of Surgeons in 2004.
His working experience started after the NYSC when he was appointed as a Senior House Officer with the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, Ilorin, Kwara state. He rose through the ranks after passing the mandatory fellowship examinations to become a Senior Registrar in Paediatric surgery in 1995. He was appointed Lecturer I with the University of Ilorin and a honourary Consultant paediatric Surgeon to the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital between 1999 and 2002. He transferred his services to the University of Maiduguri in 2003 and a consultant paediatric surgeon appointment with the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital. He became Senior lecturer in 2003, Associate professor in 2006 and the University of Maiduguri announced his elevation to full Professor of Paediatric Surgery with effect from October, 2009. He has been Head, Department of Surgery between 2005 and 2010. He is the Deputy Chairman Medical Advisory Committee (Training), University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, 2007 to 2015. He was appointed as the Medical Director of the Federal Medical Centre, Yola sinc April, 2015. He is an external examiner to many medical schools across Nigeria. He is also an examiner of the West African College of surgeons. He has served as Chairman/member of many accreditation boards to several Teaching hospitals, Federal Medical centres and medical schools on behalf of the West African College of surgeons and the Medical and Dental council of Nigeria. He has also served Chairman/member of many standing or adhoc committees of both the University of Maiduguri and the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.
He belongs to many professional societies including the International College of surgeons, member Association of Paediatric surgeons of Nigeria, Pan-African Association of Paediatric Surgeons and British association of paediatric Surgeons. He has published widely in both national and international peer reviewed journals and has attended several national and international conferences. His research interests are in the challenges of congenital malformations and Paediatric Urology.
He won the Honours Award for a Distinguished National Youth Service in Nigeria in 1991 and in 1992 he won the LATUNDE ODEKUprize as the best candidate for the primary examination in Surgery in Nigeria of the National Postgraduate Medical college of Nigeria. The MBBS class of 2009 voted him as their most favourite lecturer in the College of Medical sciences, University of Maiduguri. And more recently he was the leader of the team of surgeons that successfully separated a set of conjoined twins at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital. He is happily married to Hussaina Aminu Gurin and is blessed with 4 children.
