Michael Simmons, MD
Michael Simmons, MD hales from Salt Lake City, UT. Following his graduation from Brigham Young University with a bachelor degree in Business Management, he began work as a research specialist with the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University of Arizona in Tucson conducting research in the use of OCT to evaluate bypass graft quality for open heart surgery. He then attended medical school at the University of Arizona College of Medicine - Phoenix. During medical school he was a Helios Scholar at the Translational Genomics Research Institute. After his third year, Michael was selected to participate in the Medical Research Scholars Program at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD. There, his research centered on biomedical informatics, machine learning, and genetic associations with age-related macular degeneration. Michael matched to the University of Texas Southwestern Ophthalmology Residency Program and began his training there after completing his internship in internal medicine at the University of Arizona College of Medicine -Phoenix. Michael has a passionate interest in the implications of artificial intelligence on clinical practice in the field of ophthalmology. He currently lives in Dallas with his wife and their three kids.
