Alan Schwartz, MD, MSEd
Alan Jay Schwartz, MD, MSEd is Professor of Clinical Anesthesiology and Critical Care, University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He is a Senior Anesthesiologist at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Dr Schwartz currently provides anesthesia care to all types of pediatric patients. His clinical practice included adult and pediatric cardiac anesthesia. He served as President of the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists. He has provided and taught anesthesia patient care in Guatemala, China, Israel and Mexico. Dr Schwartz’s editorial accomplishments include Editor-in-Chief of the American Society of Anesthesiologists’ Self Education and Evaluation Program and Refresher Course Publication and Associate Editor of ANESTHESIOLOGY. Academically, Dr Schwartz is the author of >230 reviews, editorials, letters, chapters and commentary.
Dr Schwartz received his medical education at Temple University School of Medicine. His anesthesiology education included core residency at The University of Pennsylvania a combined cardiac, pediatric & education fellowship at The University of Pennsylvania and Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Anesthesiology with additional subspecialty certification in Pediatric Anesthesiology. He was an Associate Examiner for the American Board of Anesthesiology for 26 years. He has been International External Examiner, Anesthesiology Board Certification Program, Department of Anaesthesia & Intensive Care, University of the West Indies.
He completed an MSEd program at the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education. Dr Schwartz’s awards and honors include membership in Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, the Leonard Berwick Memorial and Christian R and Mary F Lindback Awards for Distinguished Teaching and the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists Distinguished Service Award.
