Xiaosong Meng, MD, PhD

Xiaosong Meng, MD, PhD is currently an assistant professor and Dedman Family Scholar in Clinical Care in the Department of Urology at UT Southwestern Medical Center and an emerging leader in treatment of men with prostate cancer.
Dr. Meng received his undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering prior to starting the MD/PhD program at NYU. His PhD work under the guidance of James Salzer focused on studying how Schwann cells interact with axons to promote myelin formation in the peripheral nervous system.
After graduating from medical school, he pursued Urology residency at NYU where he played a key role in building the NYU prostate MRI and MRI-US fusion-targeted prostate biopsy database which formed the basis for multiple projects throughout residency. He also gained significant experience with focal cryotherapy, which helped fuel his interest in focal therapy for prostate cancer. He then moved to Dallas where he completed his urologic oncology fellowship at UT Southwestern Medical Center.
At UT Southwestern (UTSW), Dr. Meng has played a central role in developing UTSW’s comprehensive prostate cancer focal therapy program. His current clinical practice and research focus on prostate cancer diagnosis and treatment, with expertise in ExactVu micro-ultrasound guided transperineal prostate biopsies, robotic radical prostatectomy, and MRI‑guided and energy‑based focal therapies such as transurethral ultrasound ablation (TULSA) and irreversible electroporation (IRE). He has participated as an investigator for multiple national, multi‑center clinical trials, including the CAPTAIN trial comparing TULSA with radical prostatectomy, and the PRESERVE trial evaluating IRE. His collaborative work with Radiology helped establish UT Southwestern as the busiest academic TULSA center in the United States, supported by innovations he introduced to improve procedural workflow—leading to multiple patents. His clinical strengths include exceptional communication, patient-centered counseling, and multidisciplinary collaboration across radiology, radiation oncology, pathology, and medical oncology.
In parallel with his clinical research, Dr. Meng leads a translational research program investigating RNA‑based urine biomarkers to improve treatment response assessment and early detection of recurrence after prostate ablation. He has received institutional support through the Dedman Family Clinical Scholar Award and the Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center Early‑Stage Clinical Investigator Award, reflecting strong confidence in his trajectory as a physician‑scientist. He was recently awarded the Early Clinical Investigator Award by Cancer Prevention and Research of Texas (CPRIT), supporting his development as a clinical and translational investigator in the field of prostate cancer focal therapy.
Dr. Meng is recognized nationally for his expertise in focal therapy, with invitations to speak at academic conferences, serve as course faculty, and engage patient advocacy groups. With the upcoming launch of UTSW’s Prostate Cancer Program and expanding institutional collaborations, he is poised to make sustained, high‑impact contributions to improving prostate cancer care through innovative clinical trials and translational research.
His affiliations include membership in the American Urological Association, the Endourological Society, the Focal Therapy Society, and the Society for Urologic Oncology.
