Imran Mir, MD
Dr. Mir grew up in beautiful valley of Kashmir, which is located between the Great Himalayas and the Pir Panchal Range in the Indian subcontinent. He is a graduate of Government Medical College in Kashmir, India. He completed his internship and pediatric residency at the Oklahoma University Children's Hospital, Oklahoma City. He then obtained his training in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine at UT Southwestern. After completing his Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine fellowship in 2015, he was recruited as faculty member in the division of Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine at UT Southwestern Medical School, where he is currently working as an Associate Professor of Pediatrics, and the Program Director for the Neonatal-Perinatal Fellowship Training Program.
Dr. Mir’s primary research focus is to understand the role of placental biology in neonatal morbidities. He has made several key observations including the placental contributions to neurodevelopmental outcomes after birth asphyxia and the role of placenta in clearance of fetal inflammatory responses. He has also studied the impact of multiple placental pathologic lesions with autism spectrum disorders in extremely preterm infants, thus shedding light on possible intrauterine risk factors with increased incidence of autism spectrum disorders in these vulnerable infants. He reported the placental clearance of neurobiomarker, GFAP, and showed for the first time that episodic hypoxia during normal labor can elicit the release of GFAP.
When he’s not working, he enjoys listening to semi-classical Indian music and spending time with his wife and two children. In addition to English, Dr. Mir speaks Kashmiri, Hindi and Urdu
