Alicia Kowalski, MD
A native Houstonian, Dr. Kowalski graduated from St. John’s School, Rice University, UT Houston Medical School, and completed residency at UT Houston in Anesthesiology. Her training affiliation with MD Anderson started in 1993, and was hired as faculty in 1999. She is now a Full Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology & Perioperative Medicine.
Aside from clinical care, her passion lies in professional engagement and career sustainability for those in health care. On an institutional level, Dr. Kowalski serves as the Clinical Faculty Representative to the institutional council CREWS (Career Resiliency Engagement Wellness & Sustainability). On a state level, Dr. Kowalski is the MD Anderson liaison to the University of Texas System Task Force for Physician Wellbeing.
Nationally, Dr. Kowalski founded and chairs a national symposium, Burnout to Brilliance, a CME for Physician Wellbeing and Career Sustainability. She and her sister founded the Charles S. DeJohn, MD, PhD Scholarship fund for physician education for wellness and career sustainability. She served an advisor to the charity her sons co-founded, Kids 4 Kids With Cancer, which has awarded close to $100,000 to survivors of childhood cancer.
In her free time, she enjoys doing my art work and was the 2019 Physician Spokesperson for The Arts of Healing. She enjoys most of all time with family: her husband of 28 yrs. & 2 sons, 24yo and 22yo.
FUN FACT: July 11th is Alicia DeJohn Day in Houston Texas, as proclaimed by Mayor Louis Welch.
