Christina Herrera, MD FACOG
I am an Assistant Professor on the Clinical Scholars track in the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine within the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at UT Southwestern (UTSW) Medical Center. My long-term career goal is to become an independent investigator and leading expert in Maternal-Fetal Medicine on multimodal assessment of placental disease using a combination of imaging and genomic techniques. As a specialist in high-risk pregnancy, I routinely care for patients with medical disease that leads to placental dysfunction. Despite many advances in pregnancy care, there remains no effective test to predict or treat placental-mediated disease. Over the course of my training I have developed an interest in using imaging modalities to improve patient counseling, care, and delivery in pregnant women. I conducted preliminary research in the use of magnetic resonance (MR) imaging to diagnose major fetal anomalies while in medical school. I worked on ultrasound in the characterization of Down Syndrome and MR utilization in anomalous fetuses in fellowship. I have also performed research looking at the effects of maternal disease states on pregnancy (e.g. diabetes mellitus, pulmonary hypertension). More recently, my focus has evolved to capture not only the imaging aspects but also the genomic contribution that may be informative in placenta disease. As such, I have formed a collaboration with a multidisciplinary team for research in the placenta.
