UT Southwestern Simulation-based Personal Protective Equipment Training

In order to protect patients and staff, front line health care workers must safely use personal protective equipment (PPE) in order to care for persons with infectious diseases, such as COVID-19 disease. This asynchronous educational activity provides learners with the skills to safely and effectively don and doff personal protective equipment. This course utilizes a blended methodology approach, where interprofessional groups of learners will begin by reviewing the asynchronous, module available to them on the UTSW Taleo website. Learners are required to first complete this Taleo module. Once completed, they will be able to sign up through Taleo for a simulation-based in-person course.

The Taleo Modules include

  • Donning and Doffing videos
  • Flow
  • review of checklist.

The PPE Simulation-Based in-person session is approximately 45 minutes and includes the following elements:

  • Learner to Instructor Ratio: Four learners (broken in to two pairs – “buddies”) with one trainer.
  • Content: In person sessions will focus on hands-on training, addressing the psychomotor objectives of the course, and ensuring all leaners can demonstrate safe application and removal of PPE.
  • Instructional Materials: Posters tapped to the walls will be available for both instructors and learners’ reference. These posters follow the step-by-step process for donning and doffing. Laminated sheets of these checklist will also be available in each room for instructors.
