Thomas Cotter

Dr. Thomas Cotter graduated from National University of Ireland, Galway with 1st Class honors in Medicine in 2013, before completing his intern year at The Mater Misericordiae University Hospital in Dublin in 2014.
Dr. Cotter then completed internal medicine residency at Mayo Clinic, Minnesota, before completing a gastroenterology fellowship at the University of Chicago Medical Center on a NIH T32 Institutional Training Grant, where he served as chief fellow during the 2018-2019 academic year. He is currently an advanced transplant hepatology fellow at The University of Chicago Medical Center and will complete his training in June 2021, whereupon he will be seeking a faculty position as a transplant hepatologist at an academic institution in the US. In addition, he completed a Masters Degree in Public Health Sciences at the University of Chicago in 2020.
Dr. Cotter’s research is primarily outcomes-based, and is focused on improving the care of patients with alcohol-associated liver disease and of liver transplant recipients. He has published several first author original research publications in high-impact journals including Hepatology, Gut, American Journal of Transplantation, Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Transplantation and Liver Transplantation. He has also delivered a number of oral presentations at national and international conferences. He serves on the Education subcommittee of the Clinical Practice Sig of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD) and the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG) Education Universe Editorial Board.
